Pilot Project

 

Arkhefield is proud to be partnering with BHC Creating Liveable Communities on their first philanthropy-backed housing initiative, located in Chermside. This pilot project represents a bold step toward addressing housing insecurity through thoughtful design and community collaboration.

 

This pilot project will transform a single residential lot into three architecturally designed townhomes. Each home will feature three bedrooms and be tailored to meet the needs of single-parent families, providing a stable and supportive environment to help build a secure future.

This project is made possible through a generous land donation from Brisbane City Council and reflects a shared commitment to creating liveable, inclusive communities.

Our design approach focuses on:

  • Functionality and Flexibility: Each townhome is designed to support the diverse needs of single-parent households.
  • Community and Privacy: The layout balances shared spaces with private areas to foster a sense of belonging while respecting individual needs.
  • Sustainability: The homes incorporate passive design principles and efficient use of space to ensure long-term livability.

Arkhefield’s commended entry ‘Retrofix’ in the Density and Diversity Done Well design competition was selected by the Queensland Government Architect and the Department of Housing and Public Works to be developed as a demonstration project. The original concept has been adapted to suit a corner suburban site (previously three houses) in Holland Park for a community of twelve one-bedroom units.

Our brief was to design 12 single bedroom units for residents of social housing for the Department of Housing and Public Works. This was to be achieved by providing rational, cost effective, compact units which are adaptable, robust and capitalise on the site’s elevation and aspect. Units were to meet gold and platinum LHA standards with an emphasis on flexibility and livability.
