The
Barracks
The historic Barracks precinct on Brisbane’s city fringe sat vacant for 20 years. Arkhefield revived the project and realised the potential of the site by rethinking the master plan to create a dynamic mixed use precinct.
The development combines commercial, retail, dining and entertainment, with a strong emphasis on the public realm and thoroughfare. A series of lanes draws on the original plan of the site, articulating the Barracks with the nearby Roma Street transport hub, Suncorp Stadium and Caxton Street precinct. Working to strict heritage guidelines, the unique characteristics of the site and buildings were preserved and restored to create a precinct that combines the old with the new.
The Barracks has proven highly successful for the developer, tenants and public. The landmark development comprises offices, cinemas, a supermarket, fresh food markets, speciality retail and dining.
Today the Barracks site is a safe, secure and vibrant addition to the local community, and has brought great social and economic benefits to the area. A much-loved but long-neglected Brisbane landmark has been transformed into a centre of business activity, social gathering and urban delight … a vital element of the local city west fabric.
